Best opening for black???

Borrowing a response pattern from many other disciplines (Best diet? The one you'll stick to. Best workout? Ditto. Best self-defense weapon? The one you'll have with you, etc.), the best opening is the one you know well.

The opening you know well will be the one that interests you the most.

It's true that if you're playing high-level correspondence chess you need to be rather careful with these opening choices, but otherwise I really do contend it's just a matter of finding one you enjoy playing and will put in the time to learn and understand.

These days I don't really have a main weapon, and just dabble in everything, but if I had to pick a couple to recommend, I'd probably go with 1...e5 against 1.e4 and the Nimzo/Bogo complex against d4.

Rich positions with a lot to learn in both cases, but as I indicated initially, it's really just a matter of what you enjoy and will spend time with.

If the idea of 1...e5 bores you immensely, but you find the Scandinavian quirky and interesting, then by all means learn all you can about the Scandinavian.

You'll do better with a "suboptimal" opening that you know well than with an excellent one that you can't convince yourself to study.

Cheers!
I agree wholeheartedly with #11's response. I also play e5 against e4.

More unusual though is that I play e5 against d4 too. That's a gambit that's not too highly looked upon, but I'm having luck with it. I might not if I played at higher levels though.

So, my answer to the initial question has got to be e5.
What about Russian??? I saw GMs playing it and I feel good about it and there is no risk. And danish gambit is having a dangerous answer to it. Download Celebellum opening book and be defeated in the opening. Gambit are good when someone have not practiced. But my case is different.
The Russian System is a good opening. Its a little dry but still very playable especially at lower levels.

I think the mainline goes something like
e4 e5 nf3 nf6 nxe5 d6 nf3 nxe4 d4 d5 at least that is how I learned it to be played. There are some gambit lines you have to know as black and can be very dangerous Urusov is one of them that can transpose from a bishops opening. And there is the Boden gambit is another.
e5 is the one that works better because it makes me lost everyday
@chessanalyst

Yep I agree, the petrov defense is absolutely solid for black!!
extreme heavy to crack for white...
on the other hand: it is a typical chess defense "if" you are satisfied with a draw...
