Cheating

Yes... last time I encountered someone who was - amittedly - just a better chess player than me (sadly - or luckily - no shenanigans though) and this player had me beaten at the start of the endgame. I took a break, got a cup of tea, drank it, and resumed to the game, where I did not resign but instead played out the moves... and with no pawns left I was stalemated! However this isn't something to be proud of.
They don't start playing better their opponent just starts to blunder.

Of course, all of this could be related to other factors, not being focused at the beginning or the end but I still find myself clueless sometimes after rather odd "change of playstyle" and strength level that turns around games.

Yes I think it happens. I feel that also. But not usually. Maybe 1/5th of the games, I dunno.

I don't really care. I mean...obvious in online chess this is always possible.

But I do hate when it is clearly a case of 'my opening is awesome! I'm gonna prove it! When actually their opening sucks.

I do not understand the dynamic of opening nationalism. But it is real. I cannot count how many times someone played some obvious 'pet' opening and I simply crushed it...and they had a terrible position...and then they pause a few minutes and suddenly play like a God to manage a draw.

It's mental illness.
I usually report any game that I find strange.

With that said, I don't want to punish good fair play.

There are cheating strategies that are hard to detect.

At some point, we will need to trust each other.

Perhaps fully ID verified accounts are the way to go someday.

All the best,

Rauan

This video flawlessly deals with your question.

I'm not privy to some of Lichess' numbers, but based on my own experience, I calculated and estimated that about 1800 is somewhere around 4.0-5.5% 1900 is around 2.5-4.0% and over 2000 is somewhere between around 1-2.5%.

Of course, the lower the rating the more chance of cheaters, but this is only because Lichess does a great job of kicking them out. Between ICC and Chess.com, Lichess does it the best, hands down.

Cheating is almost non-existent here, and Lichess does the best at enforcing fair play.
We're all in the best hands possible!
