As Jorjo has already explained, you have a mate threat on e2. If the defender moves (the knight) you checkmate white. That means that you can attack the knight and it won't move. In the end you win the knight. In many puzzles the solution has something to do with winning a piece somehow. Usually you don't checkmate but you win material as a consequence of a mate threat.
