etiquette in rated games

I agree with mwghost - take-backs and added time distort the quality of rated play. If you are really enjoying a passage of play and wish to continue, then add on play for your opponent by all means, but I see no reason to accede to the requests of your opponent (or vice-versa). As for take-backs: they are against the rules of chess as I understand them. Made a mistake, including mouse slip; hard luck whichever player erred.
The rules of chess are pretty much whatever the implementation we use defines them to be. Otb chess does not have the chance of a slip associated with using an input device such as a mouse.
Pretty much. This is online chess. It's incorrect to think that things aren't going to be different, and caveats can't be made. We can do A LOT of things differently.
Actually, as coledavis said, takebacks and asking for extra time ruin the quality of rated games. In bullet, blitz, and even classical games, if your time runs out it's your fault that you let your time slip away.
Hi, I also consider the first answer on this thread as the best.

do we have takebacks in face to face games? I have never seen that.

and yes, a mouse slip can happen in online games but come on, how to distinguish this from a blunder, specially without losing your time?

I think some people take this too seriously.. it is just a game!
Yes, now that it is agreed upon that takebacks should not be allowed, the question that arises is should the takeback option be abolished completely? I personally think yes. What do you guys think?
And when I say abolished, I mean edited out of the game play. So if abolished, neither player would be able to even request a take back.
You can disable takebacks in your preferences, so if you don't want to be asked for them in your own games you don't have to be. You can also choose to allow them in casual games only if you want.

I don't see any need to remove the option from the system completely since many players are ok with them.

Personally I accept takebacks for obvious mouse slips but not for blunders, but I don't ask for them myself even for mouse slips.

I don't know how to add time, and it's never really come up in any of my games. There doesn't seem to be any setting for disabling that in preferences, and it might be good to have one.
Mouse slips are very common......But I don't think giving take backs is good. How can I distinguish them from a blunder?
Its my opponent's fault, not mine. Neither do I accept take backs, nor I give them when I have a mouse slip. Chess is not a computerized game. In face to face chess, do we ever give take backs, or do we ever accept our opponents wish? In fast games take backs are more common......However I like fast games the most!
In regards to "rage quitting", I think more players quit instead of resining becuase they'd need to click the resign option then move the cursor over the entire page to return to the homepage. It's easier just to click something once or have the return button near the resign option.
